AI Chatbots Are Increasing Doctors' Workload

The incorrect information patients receive from AI-powered chatbots is causing a new crisis in healthcare.

In today's digital age, as AI technologies become integrated into every area of life, the unverified and incorrect medical information offered by tools such as general language models and chatbots is causing a new crisis in the healthcare sector. Studies show that the incorrect information obtained from such platforms causes patients unnecessary anxiety, increases the questions they direct at doctors, and creates a trust problem toward doctors. While this further increases doctors' workload, it can also lead to the deterioration of doctor-patient relationships.

It Makes the Health System Inefficient

Experts state that the information offered by general language models is not competent enough to assess person-specific medical conditions and can therefore lead to misguidance. When patients consult doctors in doubt and fear with information they obtained from the internet, doctors have to spend additional time refuting this information and explaining the correct treatment method. This both leads to inefficiency in the health system and creates unnecessary stress for patients.

It Cannot Replace a Doctor's Diagnosis

Opinion AI CTO Burhan İnal, whose company carries out AI work in the healthcare field, said the following on the matter: “Language models and chatbots have incredible potential, but they must be used with extreme caution when it comes to medical advice. These tools are not sophisticated enough to accurately process complex and personalized medical information. When a patient asks a language model about their symptoms, the answer they receive cannot replace a doctor's diagnosis. What matters to us is to develop these technologies responsibly and to offer tools that support doctors rather than make their work harder. For example, developing dedicated AI solutions to assist with administrative tasks and data analysis can enable doctors to spend more time with patients. However, medical diagnosis and treatment decisions must always be in the hands of a specialist.”

Burhan İnal summarized what needs to be done regarding this issue, which causes various difficulties for doctors and patients, as follows:

“To overcome this problem, AI developers and healthcare organizations need to collaborate. It is of great importance that the public be made aware that they should approach medical information obtained from general AI tools with skepticism and must always consult a specialist for any health problem.”
